About the Exhibition

In this exhibition of paintings and ceramics by artist Robert Fitzmaurice themes of calm and revolt are explored through abstractions that unfold through the slow process of looking. Taking inspiration from local history, especially that of inland waterways and Newbury wharf in its 300th year, the exhibition is a meditation on slowness as an antidote to turmoil in our world today.

Research and Inspiration

A small selection of source material relating to Newbury Wharf that I found in the museum store early on in my pre-project research.
The patterns on fragments of pottery that had lain hidden in the mud for hundreds of years spoke to me of the power of art to endure even when buried by unfavourable conditions. Similarly a crushed and punctured pewter jug spoke to me from a time with its own set of problems, yet distinct from the churn and intensity of life today.
These objects and the people in the photographs together formed a set of motifs that influenced my work for this exhibition.
